Processing type
The techniques involved in the machining process vary between the different tools used for cutting. Sometimes machined investment castings require a certain texture or very specific dimensions, and in each case a different tool is used. Some different types of machining operations include turning, drilling, boring, reaming, and milling. In turning, single-edged cutting tools are used to remove excess material from rotating parts and create cylindrical shapes. In the process of drilling a round hole, which is similar, a curved tip is used to improve the accuracy of an already roughed hole. Reaming removes a small amount of excess metal from an already drilled hole, while milling is a rotary tool with multiple cutting edges used to create a straight surface.
