The University of Vienna, founded in 1365, is one of the oldest and largest universities in Europe. About 9,600 employees, of whom 6,800 are academic staff, work in 19 faculties and centers. This makes the University of Vienna the largest research and academic institution in Austria.

About 94,000 national and international students are currently enrolled at the University of Vienna. With more than 175 degree programs, the university offers the most diverse courses in Austria. The University of Vienna is also a major provider of continuing education.

Excellence in doctoral training has a long tradition at the University of Vienna. The University provides structures to help doctoral candidates focus on their studies and successfully complete their research projects. These subsystems include the Vienna Doctoral Schools and Vienna Doctoral Academies, founded in 2016, as well as the uni: docs program. Furthermore, the University of Vienna organizes workshops to train and develop transferable skills and provides platforms for communication and networking.

Another important objective of the University is to develop and implement various measures for the advancement of women's academic careers. Therefore, the University of Vienna offers workshops and long-term activities – suitable for a target group ranging from female Ph.D. students to senior postdoctoral researchers. With a wide range of 27 subjects, the University of Vienna is the largest institution for teacher education in Austria. The University is committed to further developing university-based teacher education in terms of content, principles, and structure. A Center for Teacher Education was established to ensure the effective implementation of these programs.
