"Since then, we've found that all of these PFAS are immunosuppressants," says Peasley. "As a result, they suppress your immune system, which means that any opportunistic disease, including some types of cancer, may have the upper hand."

Eleven states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, now have rules banning or reducing PFAS in items such as carpets, clothing and cosmetics, and food wrappers and containers.

Many companies have voluntarily removed PFAS from their products or packaging.

Scientists at the Green Policy Institute list dozens of companies with PFAS-free products on the PFAS Central website, including Sephora Cleaning, Ikea, HM, and Chick-Fil-A food packaging.

"Big companies have committed to phasing out by 2025, and small companies are already doing it," Mr. Peasley said.

It's hard to get one, but consumers should start looking for labels that say "PFAS free," Peasley said
