Where Should We Stop and What Should We See?

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the North Shore's main attraction, may be reached by departing from Two Harbors, Minnesota and continuing northward.

Duluth, Minnesota is the biggest freshwater estuary in North America. This 12,000-acre wetland is now undergoing restoration and is a fantastic area to go kayaking or canoeing. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the North Shore's main attraction, may be reached by departing from Two Harbors, Minnesota and continuing northward.

But if you want to keep going on the drift hunters picturesque byway, you may do so by going via Two Harbors and on to the pebbly sands of Kelsey Beach, where you can relax and eat a piece of pie from Betty's (more on that later). You may see the state's most photographed landmark, the Split Rock Lighthouse, located at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, which is reached through a short drive from the shore.

Tettegouche State Park, which has some of the state's largest waterfalls, is just 20 minutes away from the lighthouse. You may go for a stroll along the cliffside route or trek up the Cascades route to the waterfall. From there, you may visit the state parks of Caribou Falls State Wayside and Temperance River State Park before arriving at Lutsen, a little town with a ski resort that becomes a beautiful mountain retreat in the warmer months of the year. Enjoy breathtaking views of the lake from the Summit Express gondola, go mountain biking, or take a thrilling trip down an alpine slide.

The next major destination is the seaside city of Grand Marais. The little town is home to several excellent restaurants and a thriving cultural scene, highlighted by the world-famous North House Folk School. If you keep going, you'll get some fantastic looks of Tombolo, one of the lake's most recognizable North Shore islands, before you reach Grand Portage.
